As a full time mum to two children Fiona talks about the Get Ahead VA Franchise and how she is able to operate a successful business around her family commitments.
I work Monday to Friday but if I need to have a non-working day due to school holidays or inset day’s I plan that in and if I have a deadline, I schedule it in earlier.
I am able to drop and pick up my children from school and work the hours in between. As my children are older, I can also work when they have come back but I’m there if they need me. If they are ill, I can collect them from school and if they have an assembly I can plan that into my working week and attend guilt free.
This varies each week depending on the work I need to complete for clients and other meetings I have committed to but it is all within my control. I do occasionally do a couple of hours work on an evening or a weekend but this is to fit in something else I want to do in my usual working hours.
I work mainly from home and attend both network and client meetings as well. Again, these are for me to determine what works best for the family so whilst there are many breakfast and evening meetings, I focus on lunchtime networking. Because I’m self-employed all the decisions are down to me and with good planning I can be there for my children and run a business.
Ideally yes. Even though the work we do is done virtually getting out to networking meetings and seeing clients I need to be able to drive. Depending on the public transport links in the area this may not be as much of a requirement.
Yes, I had a full three days induction when I first joined Get Ahead covering off all the key areas to get me started. Ongoing Rebecca provides mentoring in an extremely supportive style.
Having looked at a number of different opportunities prior to making my decision to join Get Ahead I would make my recommendation based on the following.
You get to run your own business but have the full support of Rebecca and a team with various skills and expertise so you don’t feel like you have to do everything on your own. Because you make the decisions, with good planning you can make the business work around your family. If you’re an early riser you can do work before the family rises
Working from home can be an adjustment especially if you’ve enjoyed working in a busy office but this is my choice and I find that the school run and my meetings give me the ‘social’ element. The great thing is I know I’m not working on my own and if I have a problem, I can ask Rebecca or anyone in the team for their advice.
" I got exactly what I was told I was going to get from the beginning. Good training, great initial and ongoing support, and a good feeling of belonging to a well-organised and ambitious team of people...so great."
"Making new contacts and getting to know other businesses in my area has been a real highlight. There are so many small businesses out there and it has been interesting to meet so many different people."
"The business and the team are a perfect match for me, as they deliver real results for the businesses they work with, offering a flexible approach that suits the client. The flexibility for me to work from home and still be able to do the school run is really valuable."
