A MagiKats Tutoring franchise was the ideal way for Graham to combine his passion for teaching with the flexibility of being his own boss.
Graham’s career followed several different paths before starting his own business, working as a general manager and management consultant, and then retraining as a teacher relatively later in life.
The demands of the school system meant that he was soon looking for an alternative way to stay in education, one that allowed him to follow his calling as a teacher, but on his own terms.

We spoke to Graham about his experiences of running MagiKats Romiley and how he manages his work-life balance as he nears retirement.
“Once I’d decided that I wanted to leave formal teaching, franchising felt like the natural next step. I explored the options available, and MagiKats stood out clearly as the best fit, both for its ethos and values, and for the level of support and materials it offered. I feel it has the best educational model on the market as it’s consistent with the National Curriculum and the people behind the business have a background in education themselves.”
“It was an investment, and so it was important that I had the backing of my family, as I knew it would be a complete change from a normal 9-5. Realistically, it can take time to build up a presence in your area, but the reputation of your centre and of MagiKats can pay real dividends with recommendations and referrals for a long-term, sustainable business. If I were to have gone out and tried to start alone, I knew it would have been much harder, let alone having to prepare all of the materials for workshops. As an example, we cater for 4-16 year olds across both Maths and English subjects, so there are thousands of worksheets prepared for the network to use!”
“MagiKats was an ideal way for me to move away from the high pressure and long hours of a standard job. I work from a home office most of the time, so I no longer have to tackle the daily commute and just rent space in a local church hall for tuition sessions. I have full autonomy on how many workshops I want to run each week and what hours I work, so I have adapted my offering over the years to meet my needs and maintain a good work/life balance. As I near retirement, this means that I work part-time, on average two days a week, and still get to enjoy my life outside of the business, as well as absolutely loving teaching my students. It’s the best of both worlds.”
“Teaching is so effective when children are taught in small groups. They can work at their own pace with individual resources and are doing this alongside others, so they don’t feel singled out. It’s interactive and hands on so children enjoy it so much more.
Parents really value the time their child spends at MagiKats away from screens. Of course, there is a place for digital technology in today’s education, and it’s used throughout schooling and homework, but this personal touch really resonates with how we tutor. From a business perspective, small group tuition keeps our rates affordable to parents and helps us be more profitable too.”
“As I’ve been running for more than 12 years, it’s been fantastic to see different generations coming through. Families choose to enrol multiple children at different ages or help to spread the word by telling others at the school gate about us because of the positive impact MagiKats has had. It’s this feedback, our reputation, and my passion for teaching that keeps me energised, knowing that I’m supporting children in my local area to reach their potential at school.”

I love MagiKats as it gives me lot of flexibility to design specific programmes for varying types of students, their capabilities and requirements.
