Emma Goldstraw runs her Kiddy Cook business in North Staffordshire

Kiddy Cook | Emma GoldstrawWhat do you enjoy most about running your own business?

I love being in control of it and deciding when I want to work which gives me a great work/life balance. It’s great having the school holidays off but I do like this time to run holiday clubs. It’s allowing me to follow my passion for cooking/baking and I love helping children to find theirs.

Why did you choose to run a business with Kiddy Cook?

I love cooking and baking and working with children. I have been office based for all of my working life but always knew that I wanted to do something for myself including food and something for children and the local communities. I was talking to a friend who ran Kiddy Cook and she was looking for a career change, the opportunity was perfect and too good to miss.

What challenges have you faced since starting the business and how have you overcome them?

It is hard to get people to commit to Cookie Tots classes, when I first started putting the information on social media the interest was over whelming. But as the weeks went by numbers dropped and I decided to no longer run these classes. I have focused more on After School clubs, workshops and festivals.

How long have you been running the business, and are you where you wanted to be?

6 months and yes I am as I now have 4 After School clubs starting in September which is what I wanted. I also have a new festival to do this year - Liverpool food and drink festival and I have also done the Wedgwood festival.

Can you describe a typical day in the life of a Kiddy Cook franchisee?

Start by answering any emails, social media messages. Plan recipes and print recipe cards for for the upcoming weeks, buy ingredients. Prepare all equipment for the days classes.

Can you give an example of a 'good news story' where you’ve worked with a child and seen Kiddy Cook making a real difference?

Hi Emma, I hope that you don’t mind me contacting you directly but my son ***** has just completed the latest Kiddy Cook course at Greenways Primary and I just wanted to say thank you so much....he has absolutely loved it! He is quite fussy with his food and doesn’t like change so it has been great to see him making and trying new things, coming home proud as punch with his creations! He now wants to do it all over again!!  I will recommend the course to my friends with primary-aged children locally as it really has been a fab experience for him. Thanks again and hope that you have a great Easter.

What would you say to someone who’s considering starting a franchise with Kiddy Cook?

It is hard work, you need to be super organised and willing to work hard and don’t mind mess and washing dishes!

It’s difficult to find what people want and how much they’re willing to pay for classes. It’s also difficult to find the best area/town to do classes in and where you will get the biggest numbers.

But it is amazing when you see how much children love preparing their dishes and then when they tell you that they have made it again since!

I love doing my after school clubs as I really get to know the children.
