WHEN ex-builders Malcolm and Jon Newnham took over Dream Doors Southend they set themselves a modest sales target of £300k for their first year. The father and son team achieved that figure in just six months.

"Me and dad only lived around the corner from our Dream Doors showroom, so we walked past it every day. When we realised it had become available, we jumped at the opportunity. We could see from the beginning it had great potential to grow.
Being from a background where we’ve fitted kitchens, we knew it was a great idea and business model and we were determined to make it work.
I think we had set ourselves a low target of making £300,000 in sales by the end of our first year, but we actually hit that figure by the summer. It was amazing. We just seemed to go through a period where the more turnover we made, the more work we got - it snowballed.
I think it shows what a great product we’re selling. People like the idea of having their kitchen makeover done in just a few days, rather than taking a couple of weeks to rip everything out and replace it.
We were really surprised to make as much as we did in such a short space of time. I’m not from a sales background, so I think it just goes to show the strength of the training. I’ve had lots of customers tell me that it’s nice to talk to someone who’s not trying to ram anything down their throat.
I don’t even think of it as selling; I’m there to help guide people while they decide what they want in their kitchen. The products sort of sell themselves from there.
Taking on a franchise is a big step, it’s a big investment, but it’s an investment that’s going to see real growth really quickly. The marketing and the sales support definitely helps there too."
