David Spafford, Aspray Sheffield, is one of our longest running franchisees and In 2012, after 6 years in business and a number of personal life changing events, David and wife Helen reviewed their business and work/life balance and decided the time was right to work together to develop Aspray Sheffield.
Having worked together 10 years previously in the family engineering business the decision to do so again wasn’t hard. Helen had more recently been working as a teaching assistant with special needs children but with grown up children and the need to take school holidays no longer an issue the time was right for a career change."The key to successfully working together is to have clearly defined roles so you are not stepping on each others toes." explained Helen.
Helen came on board specifically to develop business and is targeting local insurance brokers, letting agents and plumbers which David had started to nurture back in 2009. At the time David and his neighbouring Aspray colleagues had joined forces and contracted a telemarketing agency to make the introductions and set up appointments. But a number of personal events stopped the campaign progressing.
When Helen started in 2012 she found she was almost starting from scratch as people had left and companies changed. She is now working full time to build up Aspray Sheffield’s profile and 7 months in is beginning to make positive inroads.
"The smaller broker is far more receptive to our proposition and I have a number who are now positively marketing our claims handling service to their clients. It is a difficult balancing act between keeping in contact with these companies and not stalking them but I am beginning to build relationships and I understand each person is different – some I will ring every few weeks and others every few months. I do try to keep it personal and pop in to see them whenever I can rather than calling them all the time. The new Aspray mugs and orange Kit Kats are going down a treat!"
