Adrian Steel has been shortlisted by the bfa in the 'Micro-business of the year' category. This also gives him an entry into the overall Franchisee of the Year category.
Adrian Steel, the Wilkins Chimney Sweep franchisee for North Hampshire, has topped his internal 'Franchisee of the Year' award by being shortlisted for a prestigious national award by the bfa (British Franchise Association) HSBC Franchisee of the Year Awards.
Wilkins Chimney Sweep couldn’t be more proud. He was shortlisted by the bfa in the 'Micro-business of the year' category from a record number of entrants. This also gives him an entry into the overall Franchisee of the Year category. Adrain has been a Wilkins Chimney Sweep franchisee for three years and embodies many of their values.
Adrian’s North Hampshire territory has around 114 thousand residential houses, plus pubs and flats which he also serves. With over 2000 customers on his books, more than half are on an annual return visit request. To date he has swept more than 2,500 chimneys, fitted well over 200 bird guards and removed 55 birds’ nests – one of the many ways Wilkins Chimney Sweep keep their customers safe.
Many people don’t realise how important sweeping is to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning: Wilkins Chimney Sweep also sell chimney safety products like carbon monoxide alarms, which they fit professionally.
In the time he’s been with Wilkins Chimney Sweep, Adrian has got to spend more time with his family; his son, Brogan, was born in the second year of his franchise. He studied Accounting and Finance at University, but during the course discovered he didn’t want to be an accountant. A graduate sales program with a food sales company was great, but he realised quickly that he wanted to run his own business.
Adrain bought his first franchise in 2008 without doing his 'due diligence' and parted two years later, having learned some valuable lessons. He was drawn to Wilkins Chimney Sweep by their clear brand and straightforward approach. Wilkins Chimney Sweep grilled him to find out what he’d learned from that first experience, and to ensure that he wasn’t placing all blame for the failure the first time with the franchisor. Wilkins Chimney Sweep's faith in him was well-placed - Adrian's Checkatrade rating is a stunning 9.9 (out of 10). Adrian has earned HETAS Approved Chimney Sweep status, and professional membership to the Association of Professional Chimney Sweeps (APICS).
Adrian would love to take on an apprentice eventually - and perhaps even to take over from him longer term. He fully intends to exploit his territory for a second term and take advantage of a great return on his initial investment - lifestyle-wise as well as financially.
