FRANCHISING CLIMATE CHANGE – WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP?

“We encourage our clients who have made substantial savings through our cost reduction services to re-invest some of those monies in technology or programmes to further reduce their own carbon emissions”. - Adrian Drewe, Atlantic Business Resources

Chairman of Atlantic Business Resources PLC – “franchise eco warrior”

Adrian Drewe has been Chairman of several companies ranging from construction through to English wine and has taken some of his companies onto the AIM and OFEX stock markets and considers himself an “eco warrior in the business world”.

Regarding his latest venture, Atlantic Business Resources PLC (a cost reduction management service), he is quoted as saying “we are committed to reducing our own carbon footprint by 50% over the next 5 years and are dedicated as a company to bring about environmental and climate change for the good of all of us”.

As an Associate of the IIB (The Institute for Independent Business International), Adrian has the support of over 3000 Associates many of whom are experts in specific fields. He uses this resource to gather information, and share ideas with other companies which includes the cost reduction service through Atlantic. It was at this time while working with the IIB he met up with John Miller, who came up with an innovative business plan which became Atlantic Business Resources PLC.

The Atlantic Business model provides cost management services to companies of all sizes by leveraging the £5 billion annual indirect spend of one of the world’s largest financial institution for the benefit of other companies. Indirect spend includes such areas as waste management, alternative fuels, gas, electricity, communications, stationery, insurances etc and as a result can save a company up to 60% of its bottom line spend. “We encourage our clients who have made substantial savings through our cost reduction services to re-invest some of those monies in technology or programmes to further reduce their own carbon emissions”.

By planning ahead to ensure Atlantic has the smallest possible carbon footprint they are now franchising. Atlantic has just signed up its first franchisee and is in the process of launching a nationwide network of 150 licenced agents and will actively encourage their franchisees to “fly the eco banner”. “Franchisees will promote Atlantic’s services to their local business community largely based from home or a small office and because of this they will have very small stem mileages from their home/place of work to a client, much smaller than if we were to visit them from our head offices in Sussex.”.

Adrian is concerned that there seems little awareness of climate change issues within the franchising world. “Making a profit is at the top of the agenda for the majority of business leaders – it would be it’s their bread and butter – it’s certainly ours! Atlantic would like to point out that making profit and addressing climate change are not necessarily mutually exclusive and we would like to take a lead on climate change. We believe those companies that take the initiative and exploit the opportunities will be winners.”
