How to make your business term time only

We’re used to our work time being split into hours, days, and weeks, and the only choice being full time or part time. One of the big advantages of running your own business is that you can set your own hours and work pattern.

For many mums working term-time only is the perfect way to combine earning and family life. Some business ideas will naturally fall into term time patterns, but actually pretty much any business can fit in around school holidays if you plan and prepare.

With the long summer holidays approaching, here’s some tips from Victoria Casebourne of The Keepsake Company for fitting it all in.

Plan ahead

Term Time Only Franchises | The Keepsake Co FranchiseSounds obvious but it is so important. When are the busy times going to be for your business? Christmas is often a big one, but it is also a busy time at school with performances, pantomime trips, and parties.

Think about how when you need to finish for the holidays and work backwards, when do you need to set your order deadlines to be able to keep customers and your kids happy. Then work back again, when do you need to do your marketing to get those orders in as early as you can? If you are worried about customers leaving it until the last minute why not offer a discount for early orders?

For other key dates in the year such as Easter and Mothers Day, the dates vary, as does the length of the school term at that time of year so it is extra important to be organised.

Be realistic

If it is a short half term (and they always feel not quite long enough!) what can you fit it? Prioritise the important parts of your business and consider putting some parts on hold. When time is short allocate things into ‘must do’, ‘should do’ and ‘could do’ lists. Work in order so you start with the ‘must do’, and don’t fret too much if you don’t get to your ‘could do’ list.

Outsource

Think about your potential earnings from your business and work out whether you can outsource parts of your business, or get help around the house. If you can earn £20 an hour and your cleaner only charges £10 then work on your business while someone else scrubs your bathroom. If your accounts take you hours to reconcile, would it be more efficient to pay someone to do it for you, freeing up your time to complete your work during school hours.

Your Business Your Rules

Set expectations. It is your business and you decide when you work and when you have time off. But you’ll find it easier if you are clear about when people can get hold of you, and when you aren’t available.

Consider information on your website about the best times for people to get in touch with you, set up automatic email and Facebook Messenger replies with information about your working pattern so that people know when to expect a full response from you.

The best thing about working for yourself is the freedom and flexibility it brings, make the most of it through careful planning and organisation and have a wonderful summer of fun!
