Darryl Burroughs bought an Angela's Swim School franchise in East Sussex and he opened for business in January 2016. Despite having neither a swimming nor business background Darryl has embraced the training available to him from Head Office and has developed the necessary skills to effectively manage his franchise.
Darryl Burroughs came to the UK from South Africa where he had worked in the computing industry. After some time working in the print business here in the UK, Darryl was made redundant. He spent some time reflecting on whether to relocate elsewhere in the UK for a similar job or whether to start his own business.
After considering various options he decided to explore potential opportunities available in franchising. Darryl attended the British Franchise Exhibition in October 2015 with a completely open mind regarding the type of business he was looking for, but he says that of the 100+ businesses on show that day Angela’s Swim School was the only franchise he was truly inspired by!
Darryl bought a franchise in East Sussex stretching from Littlehampton on the coast to Haywards Heath and he opened for business in January 2016:
"I love the fact that in this business we are giving clients a skill for life – we’re not simply selling a commodity."
Despite having neither a swimming nor business background Darryl has embraced the training available to him from Head Office and has developed the necessary skills to effectively manage his franchise, encompassing client support, administration, business planning and finance. Head Office has assisted Darryl to recruit staff who can support him effectively in these roles.
Of the relationship with Head Office he says:
"The support has been invaluable and I know that they will help in any way they can to ensure my business succeeds."
Darryl would advise prospective new franchisees to find a business you are passionate about:
"There are inevitably days when running a franchise is extremely hard work, but if you believe in the value your business provides to clients it makes it all worthwhile."
Darryl is building the business organically and his plans for the future are to continue this growth by taking on more pools and instructors within his franchise area. Darryl is looking forward to seeing many more clients become strong and confident swimmers learning through Angela’s Swim School proven method.
