Beth Daniel - From Cape Town to North Leicestershire

3rd December 2014

Beth Daniel moved back to the UK in 2010 and started her Helen O'Grady academy in North Leicestershire.

Beth’s experience of teaching with the Academy began in South Africa in 2006. After studying for her Bachelor of Drama degree at The University of Stellenbosch, she moved to London for a while to work as a nanny. Beth believes her love of working with children began here, especially when she worked on a one-to-one basis with a special needs child.

Helen O'Grady - Beth DanielMoving back to Cape Town in 2006, husband Matthew saw a poster for the Academy and took details home for Beth, who called and discovered they currently only needed someone to teach just one hour per week. She loved the experience so much, she pestered the Principal there until, eventually, she was teaching every day for the Academy! The following year, she also began working in their office, leading to her finally becoming Vice Principal in Cape Town.

When, in March 2010, Beth and Matthew moved to the UK, the obvious thing was for her to take on her own branch here.

Beth says:
"I love the fact I wake up every day excited about what I do. I loved teaching for the Academy in South Africa, but owning my own branch has been life changing. I love the fact whatever I do in my business, as a teacher and as a Principal, it is influencing the lives of young people positively. I love that I get to act, be a kid myself and use my imagination with the children I teach on a daily basis! Being a Principal has made me more confident and more assertive.

Children are taken on an imaginative journey because of our fantastic curriculum. The work we do allows them to feel safe and confident enough to open up and communicate thoughts and feelings. It is so satisfying to give back to the community by influencing young people. We should all empower children to feel good about who they are!"

Last year Beth was invited to join the management team as a Training Supervisor, monitoring, training and inspiring other Principals around the country. During this time she has continued to run a very successful branch, expanding each term. To recognise her achievements she was named Franchisee of the Year in July 2014.

On receiving the award she said:
"I feel very honoured and privileged to receive this for my branch! A big thank you has to go to my staff, the parents and the children who believe in the Academy and our programme as much as I do."
