A Spotlight on MAD Academy's Kate Lawrence

23rd January 2016

Kate Lawrence answers some question about her MAD Academy business.

Franchisee Spotlight - Kate Lawrence January 2014:

What is your favourite MAD Song or Activity and why?

MAD Academy - Kate LawrenceMy favourite song has to be Waiting Athletes! The children and the parents absolutely love it! In the bit at the beginning where its quiet and we sing "1,2,3 whose it going to be" the children all go to sleep like in Sleeping Bunnies and then when we say "on your marks get set go" they all jump up and run round like mad (obviously very carefully)! Great fun! I also adore the Christmas theme as it’s such a great fun party atmosphere! My favourite bit has to be when we get the bells out and all sing Jingle bells!

What's the funniest thing to happen while doing MAD?

When the power to the hall I was in suddenly went off half way through the warm up. I decided we should try and carry on singing the tune as we went. Unfortunately nobody knew the words and it turned into the scene from the Office with David Brent doing his dance! In the end we all just dissolved into laughter and collapsed on the floor! I am thinking you probably had to be there but it was very funny at the time!

What are your hobbies?

In between running MAD classes, doing MAD admin, doing school runs, feeding everyone, being a taxi driver and attempting to keep on top of the washing, ironing and cleaning I like to read!! I belong to a lovely book club and even though it mostly involves drinking wine I get to read some good books! I have just read the latest Stephen King – Doctor Sleep. Bit scary but definitely worth reading! I also play the piano, not terribly well but my son Freddie is starting to learn so I can make sure he is practising properly! I am not sure he is terribly happy about this though!

Tell us something about yourself that people may not know?

I used to play the viola and once played in an orchestra conducted by Yehudi Menuhin.

Do you have any words of wisdom for other franchisees?

To look after ‘You’! Running the franchise can become all-consuming and take all your time and especially your energy if not careful. I have found this out to my detriment and have had several bouts of tonsillitis over the last couple of years! I have had to come to terms with the fact I simply cannot do it all! I recommend getting an agent who can help run the classes and also help with parties at the weekend. Also sometimes you just have to say no and that is okay!
